A high school secretary and her husband were both shot dead in a murder-suicide, and a third person was also shot and seriously injured in what authorities say was a domestic incident inside a Northwest Indiana home.
46-year-old Brandy Manville, an administrative assistant at Portage High School, and her 45-year-old husband, Charles Manville, were both found with gunshot wounds by authorities on November 29th, the day after Thanksgiving, on Friday.
The police also stated that the third person who was shot and injured was their 21-year-old daughter, Hayleigh Manville, who was struck by gunfire three times. She was transported by medical helicopter to a nearby local hospital, and her injuries were life-threatening.
On Friday at around 7:41 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call that was made regarding a domestic disturbance at the home. The caller reportedly told the dispatcher that her dad was armed and drunk and that he was throwing items inside the home.
Shortly after, dispatchers were told that they then heard Charles yelling inside the home, and he said, “Everyone is going to die.” Then the dispatcher heard the gunshots. It was also said that when the officers first got to the scene and approached the property, they also heard the gunshots.
Several officers from different agencies then forced entry to the home. They found Charles deceased inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Brandy was then found deceased, also with gunshot wounds. Hayleigh, their daughter, was found alive inside the home with gunshot wounds and injuries. She was taken to a nearby hospital and later transported by medical helicopter to a trauma center. Reportedly, she remained hospitalized in stable condition but with serious, life-threatening injuries.
Police said the incident was isolated, and as of Saturday evening, there was no ongoing threat to the community. A motive for the shooting remained unknown.
“…We extend our deepest sympathies to the family and friends of the victims of this shocking crime,” authorities said in a Facebook post, in part. “We pray for a full and speedy recovery of the surviving victim, who we are choosing not to publicly name at this time without her consent…”
The school district shared the following message with Portage High School families, staff, and students:
“Good afternoon, Portage High School families. Today, we are mourning the unexpected passing of our beloved PHS secretary, Mrs. Brandy Manville. Mrs. Manville always gave a welcoming smile to all visitors to the main office, offering many of our students a listening ear and words of encouragement each day. She will be greatly missed by our students and staff.
Children can express grief in a variety of ways. The best way families can respond to a grieving child is to listen to them and reassure them that their feelings are valid. We will have counseling services available at the high school to assist our students and staff with processing this loss. Our high school principals will provide instructions on Monday morning for accessing these services.
Please keep the students and staff of PHS and the family and friends of Mrs. Manville in your thoughts. Thank you.”
Here is an additional statement from the district:
“Our school community is deeply saddened and impacted by this tragedy as Mrs. Manville touched the lives of so many of our students and staff. Our hearts are with her family and everyone grieving this loss.”
