A teacher from Middle Township Elementary School in South Jersey is facing serious charges after allegedly having a child with a student she is accused of sexually assaulting in her home several years ago.
Laura Caron, 34, from Cape May Court House, was arrested on Wednesday and is charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child. The alleged incidents took place between 2016 and 2020 at her residence.
According to authorities, the victim was just 13 years old and living with Caron, who was then 28, when their child was born in 2019. The case came to light after the victim’s father posted on social media in December 2024, noting that Caron’s 5-year-old child bore a striking resemblance to him and his son.
Caron had taught the victim and his brother in the 5th grade. Over time, the victim’s family became friends with Caron, which led to the children staying at her home. Initially, the visits were one to two nights a week, but from 2016 to 2020, the children lived with Caron full-time, as detailed in court documents.
During her initial court appearance, the judge referred to Caron as a “resource family parent” for the children. The victim’s sister, who also stayed at Caron’s home, reportedly told police that she believed her brother was around 11 years old when he began sharing a bed with his teacher. She mentioned that the children slept in a shared room on the second floor, but she often noticed her brother in Caron’s bed the next morning. Additionally, she claimed that Caron would enter the bathroom and lock the door while her brother was showering.
In a text to his sister, the victim allegedly confessed to being the father of Caron’s 5-year-old child and asked her to keep it a secret. The victim’s brother, who also spent time at Caron’s home, claimed to have witnessed Caron sexually assaulting his brother once when he thought he was asleep.
During a police interview, the victim confirmed the sexual relationship with Caron and acknowledged that he was the father of her child. He stated that he had been in contact with her until his father’s Facebook post in December.
In response to the allegations, Middle Township School District Superintendent Dr. David Salvo stated, “When the district was first advised of the allegations, the staff member was immediately placed on and continues to be on paid administrative leave. Additional questions should be directed to the Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office.”
Caron is currently being held at the Cape May County Correctional Center. Middle Township Police Chief Tracey Super assured parents, “I want to personally assure the parents of Middle Township that we are taking every step possible to ensure the safety of our children. Our department is working closely with the Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that every aspect of this case is thoroughly investigated.”
