A man and a woman, both inmates in solitary confinement, managed to conceive a child without ever physically meeting.
Twenty-nine-year-old Daisy Link gave birth to a baby girl on June 19 while serving time at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami-Dade. Daisy had been behind bars for two years at the time of the birth, serving a sentence for killing her boyfriend.
Her family, confused by the pregnancy, initially claimed that Daisy must have been sexually assaulted by a prison guard or another individual, prompting them to demand an internal investigation.
However, DNA testing confirmed that the father of the baby is a fellow inmate, 23-year-old Joan Depaz (ID: 200147865), who was also serving time for an alleged murder.
When Joan was asked if he and Daisy had ever physically touched, he responded, “Never, like the Virgin Mary.”
In January, Daisy explained to 7News that Joan passed his semen through the vent connecting their cells. She described knocking on the vent to communicate with people on different floors, even standing on the toilet to talk. The two also exchanged notes and pictures through the vent.
Daisy said, “Being in isolation for so long, you begin to spend hours and hours talking to this person, to the point where it’s almost as if you’re in the same room with them.”
Their conversations developed into a romantic relationship. Joan shared his dream of wanting a baby, saying he wouldn’t be able to have one for a long time but would choose Daisy if he had the chance. Daisy shared the same desire, stating, “I don’t know what my fate is, and you kind of don’t know yours. If we’re going to go, we might as well just go out with a bang, you know? If it works, it works. But it definitely did.”
Joan came up with the plan, claiming, “This is gonna go down in history.” Using a chain of bedding, he passed semen wrapped in Saran Wrap through the vent to Daisy. He said he repeated this process up to five times a day for about a month.
Daisy described how Joan rolled the semen into a shape resembling a cigarette, attached it to the line, and passed it through the vent. She then used yeast infection applicators to inseminate herself.
According to Daisy, it only took a few attempts before she became pregnant. When she found out, she was ecstatic, saying she couldn’t believe it worked but believed, “Everything happens for a reason, and this baby is a blessing our miracle baby.”
A doctor reportedly told a news outlet that the chances of such a pregnancy occurring were about 5% and called the case exceedingly unusual.
The two inmates are now housed in separate facilities, but they still communicate via phone and video calls. Their baby girl is reportedly living with Joan’s mother.
Meanwhile, officials at the Miami-Dade Correctional Center have launched an internal investigation into how the couple’s plan succeeded, aiming to prevent such incidents in the future.
