A 20-year-old Missouri father, Richard Leonard, is facing accusations of severely abusing his 2-month-old daughter, leaving her with 14 fractures. Leonard claimed the injuries were caused by accidentally tripping over the baby, but authorities have labeled the case as “classic abuse.”
The disturbing situation came to light on December 18th when Leonard and his wife brought their daughter to a pediatrician for a routine checkup. The doctor noticed bruising on the infant’s body and raised concerns. When questioned, Leonard claimed he either did not notice the bruising or did not think it was significant.
The pediatrician recommended that the parents take the baby to a hospital for further examination and reported potential abuse to the Department of Family Services hotline. Authorities subsequently conducted a home visit but found the baby in her mother’s arms, appearing content.
However, the following day, police received a call from the hospital, where the baby had been brought overnight. Medical staff discovered 14 fractures in the infant’s arms, legs, ribs, and fingers. Some of the fractures were at different stages of healing, suggesting ongoing abuse over an extended period.
Investigators interviewed both parents and determined that Leonard had been abusing the child for approximately a month. During questioning, Leonard reportedly confessed to the abuse and was taken into custody.
As of Friday, Leonard has been released on a $50,000 bond under strict conditions. He is prohibited from contacting his daughter or her mother. The case has left the community in shock, with authorities emphasizing the importance of vigilance in recognizing and reporting signs of child abuse.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials work to ensure the safety and well-being of the infant. Leonard’s legal representation and potential plea have not yet been disclosed.
