This past weekend, a veterinarian fatally shot her husband multiple times, resulting in his death.
Dr. Jennifer Kerri Ray, a South Carolina resident and co-owner of Hitchcock Animal Hospital, was arrested on charges of allegedly killing her husband inside their home. Reports indicate that she shot him in the back multiple times, and the incident occurred after he had filed for divorce.
Jennifer was taken into custody on Sunday and charged with one count of murder and one count of possessing a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the death of her estranged husband, Greg Baughman.
On December 1st, deputies from the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported shooting at a residence around 5 p.m. in Aiken, South Carolina, near the Georgia border. Upon arrival, officers reportedly saw Jennifer walking from the backyard to the front yard. She was immediately detained, placed in handcuffs, and secured in the back of a patrol car.
When authorities entered the house, they found Greg lying on the floor with multiple gunshot wounds. Several spent bullet casings surrounded his body, and a black handgun was reportedly recovered from the kitchen counter. He was pronounced dead at the scene around 6:30 p.m.
According to the arrest warrant, Jennifer knowingly acted with the intent to kill, shooting her husband multiple times in the back and continuing to fire after he had fallen to the floor.
It was revealed that the couple had been separated for some time, with Greg filing for divorce on October 25th. Court documents indicated that they initially separated on August 29th. Greg had also requested court orders to prevent either of them from selling, mortgaging, or depleting marital assets. Additionally, he sought a “no adverse contact” order against Jennifer.
Jennifer was served with the divorce papers on November 9th. During her court appearance on Monday, her attorney claimed that she had been a victim of domestic abuse, stating that she had been hospitalized last month due to injuries. Jennifer reportedly refrained from filing charges against Greg because he was a Marine, and she feared that the allegations could jeopardize his career.
The two were co-owners of Hitchcock Animal Hospital in Aiken. On Monday, the hospital announced that it would temporarily close to allow its team to regroup and discuss how to move forward as a business and a community.
Jennifer has been prohibited from contacting any members of Greg’s family. She is currently being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court again on March 14, 2025.
